If you spent any time in the arcade during the late 1980’s you surely know about the Rampage game by Midway Games. For the younger crowd, an arcade is a building where they used to have a whole bunch of arcade games you could play for a quarter. This was before the proliferation of console games.
A quick look back at video game based movies over the years will show that they typically aren’t blockbusters. That’s a real shame since a lot of video games actually have interesting back stories to them. Either they weren’t adapted well for movies, had bad acting, or sometimes … both.
That shouldn’t be a problem with Rampage. They went out and got Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to star in the movie. The Rock has been box office gold as of late. Maybe it’s because he is just so dang charismatic. No matter what he does on screen you end up liking him.
The Rock plays a primatologist who befriends a rescued albino silver-back gorilla. There is a corporation doing experiments on gene mutation (CRISPR) at their lab which is in orbit around Earth. This corporation is Scumlabs in the game. It’s yet to be seen if it will be the same in the movie.
Somehow three canisters containing their mutation formula escape from the on orbit lab. On lands in San Francisco (George the Gorilla), one lands in Wyoming (Ralph the Wolf), and one lands in the Everglades (Lizzie the Lizard). They mutate into large aggressive hybrid animals.
The Rock must find a way to save George the Gorilla and stop Ralph and Lizzie from destroying everything in their path. If anyone else were starring in this movie I would be hesitant to watch it. Dwayne Johnson seems to only make good movies lately so I will definitely be in line to watch this one.
