Spongebob Squarepants talent interview SDCC 2017

Spongebob Squarepants is one of those iconic cartoons where even if you didn’t watch it, you knew what it was about. The series started in 1999 and was just renewed for it’s twelfth season in 2017. There have been a few Spongebob Squarepants movies based on the series: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePantis (2007), and SpongeBob’s Truth or Square (2009).

We were lucky enough to interview SpongeBob SquarePants voice actors Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star) and Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) along with Vincent Waller (supervising producer) and Marc Ceccarelli (supervising producer).

The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his various friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The series’ popularity has made it a media franchise, as well as the highest rated series to ever air on Nickelodeon, and the most distributed property of MTV Networks. As of 2015, the media franchise has generated $12 billion in merchandising revenue for Nickelodeon.

Bill Fagerbakke voices multiple characters in the series but is best known for his portrayal of Spongebob’s friend, Patrick Star. Patrick lives two houses down from SpongeBob. Patrick is a dim-witted yet friendly pink starfish who lives under a rock. He sees himself as intelligent although he is most certainly not.

Carolyn Lawrence is the voice of Sandy Cheeks. Sandy is a squirrel from Texas. She is a scientist and an expert in karate. Sandy lives in an oak tree entrapped in a clear glass dome locked by an airtight, hand-turned seal. When outside of the dome she wears an astronaut-like suit because she cannot breathe underwater.
