Elektra is back
The headline is correct. Marvel is launching a new Elektra comic book set to hit shelves in February 2017. She has decided to relocate to Las Vegas. Problem is, she isn’t the only one that has set up shop in Sin City. The villain, Arcade is headquartered there as well and he has taken a shine to Elektra.
Who is Elektra?
Elektra Natchios is a highly trained assassin of Greek descent. She wields a pair of bladed sai as her trademark weapons. She was born on a Greek island near the Aegean Sea. Her mother is killed, but gives birth to her prematurely before dying.
Elektra attended Columbia University in New York City where she began dating classmate Matt Murdock (Daredevil). Later, Elektra and her father are kidnapped by terrorists. A rescue attempt by Matt went wrong and her father was fatally shot. Elektra Columbia and returned to China to study martial arts. She met a member of the benevolent organization called the Chaste named Stick. He recognized the darkness in her soul and attempted to train her himself. She ultimately sided with a sect of mystical ninja called the Hand. They trained her as an assassin. She later broke away from them and became an independent agent. She encountered Matt Murdock, who was now active as Daredevil. He revealed his secret identity to her and they worked together to fight the Hand. They also came into conflict frequently.
Elektra’s Power and Abilities
Elektra has a strong knowledge of martial arts and weaponry. She learned the ancient martial arts of China, Siam, and Japan. She is a master combatant with the Okinawan sai. She is also highly skilled with the katana, daggers, three-section staff, and shuriken. She is a master of many Japanese combat forms including ninjutsu. Elektra has the ability to mesmerize others, and as such make them see illusions or other phenomena. She also has the ability to “throw” her mind into those of others. This temporary mind control enables her to metaphorically sniff out the psyche or intent of her targets.
Who is Arcade?
Arcade can be described as a combination of evil genius and hit-man. His preferred method of murder is an underground fun-house of colorful deathtraps. His deathtraps are usually decorated in cheery colors and disguised as an amusement park. He calls these deadly amusement parks, Murderworld. One recent notable exception to this is the Avengers Arena comic book. He and a new associate named Miss Coriander abduct 16 teenage superheroes (several with ties to the Avengers). They strand them on a deserted island which has been modified as an elaborate Murderworld location. The teenager superheroes are forced to fight to the death. If one is not killed every day, he picks one to be taken out.
Arcade’s origin has never been fully explained. Even his real name remains largely unknown. By Arcade’s own account he was born into an extremely wealthy family. He lived most of his early life in either a ranch in Texas or a mansion in Beverly Hills (depends on which version of his story you believe). In his late teens/early 20’s his allowance was cut off by his father. He was told he did not deserve it. Arcade murders his father, and inherits all of the man’s vast estate. Since this story is told by Arcade himself the accuracy is questionable.
Arcade became a freelance assassin. He traveled across the world killing people. He amassed even more wealth than he already had. He learned he had an aptitude for technology. Arcade designed and built his first Murderworld. With the help of two mysterious assistants named Miss Locke and Mr. Chambers he emerged as the world’s most expensive hit-man. For the price of $1 million he would tailor Murderworld to exploit the specific weaknesses of his target. You could then watch as they are killed by the variety of colorful deathtraps strewn throughout the facility. One of his “gimmicks” is he always leaves each target a small chance of survival.
Arcade’s Power and Abilities
Arcade has no superhuman powers. He does possess genius-level knowledge of technology, particularly in the fields of robotics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. He is able to utilize technology make it seem as if he has powers.
