My favorite Justice League team is from the late 1980’s.  That team had Booster Gold and Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) as best friends.  Their time on the page of Justice League is second only to Guy Gardner’s panels with Batman.  Booster Gold and Blue Beetle provided some of the best comedic relief on the book.  They weren’t all fun and games though.  When the job needed to be done they stepped up.

Ted Kord had no super powers.  He used science and gadgets to take care of the bad guys.  Unfortunately, DC Comics killed him off during their Infinite Crisis series.

Jaime Reyes is a teenager who lives in El Paso, Texas. His father owns a garage and his mother is a nurse. Jaime finds the Blue Beetle Scarab in a vacant lot and it fuses with him while he sleeps.  The Blue Beetle scarab is originally shown as an artifact of magic.  Later the story makes it a tool of war of the Reach, an ancient race of cosmic marauders.

The reach were defeated by the Guardians of the Universe thousands of years ago and forced into a truce.  They now pose as benevolent aliens lending their advanced technology to budding civilizations. The scarab is a gift for that world’s champion. It gives him amazing powers and the knowledge of the Reach to protect his or her peers.

Secretly, the scarab is part of an advanced hive mind.  It has its own artificial intelligence covertly supplanting the wearer’s own. The wearer is turned into a covert agent intended to take over its own world. The Blue Beetle Scarab is damaged. Instead of it controlling the host, it forms a symbiotic relationship with them.

In DC Universe: Rebirth, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes believe the scarab is an alien device that bonded to Jaime’s spine. Kord is fascinated by this scarab and wants to investigate its potential.  Jaime fears it. Dr. Fate appears in the lab to warn Kord that the scarab is not an alien device, but is magic. This further sparks Kord’s interest in the potential of the scarab.
