Black Cat & Silver Sable get spin-off movie

Black Cat Silver Sable

Black Cat & Silver Sable movie

Sony is developing a new Spider-man spin-off movie. No, I’m not talking about Venom. This movie will feature 2 of Spider-man’s love interests from the comic book, Black Cat and Silver Sable.

These 2 characters have mostly been used as supporting cast in Marvel Comics. They have put in their time on the bench and are ready to jump into the limelight with their own movie. The characters are strong, independent females. The time is right for this kind of movie. I only hope Sony is up to the task of producing a film that showcases all the great things about these 2 characters.

Who is the Black Cat?

The Black Cat made her first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 (July 1979). She was originally developed to be used in Spider-Woman. When Marv Wolfman was reassigned to work on Spider-man he brought Black Cat with him.

Felicia Hardy is the daughter of a world-renowned cat burglar. In the “Evil that Men Do” story-line it was revealed she was raped by her boyfriend while a freshman at Empire State University. She hated feeling like a victim so she she trained herself in various fighting styles and acrobatics. Felicia planned on killing the man who raped her, but he was killed in a drunk driving accident first.

Felicia decided to use her new talents to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a cat burglar. Her father was caught and arrested. Felicia created the costumed identity of the Black Cat and planned to break him out of prison. She ran into Spider-man that night and developed a strong affection toward him.

Originally Felicia had no superhuman abilities. While working for the Kingpin she was given psionic ability to affect probability fields. In layman’s terms she was able to project “bad luck” upon her enemies.

Doctor Strange used his mystic powers to remove her bad luck abilities. Of course this had some side effects like giving her cat-like abilities. Felicia gained night vision, retractable talons in her fingertips, superhuman speed, strength, agility, and endurance proportionate to a cat.

Later, her “bad luck” powers were restored by Doc Tramma through the use of cybernetics. She also acquired several devices from the Tinkerer that increase her agility and heighten her strength.

Who is Silver Sable?

Silver Sable first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #265 (June 1985). Silver Sablinova is a mercenary, hunter of war criminals, the leader of the Wild Pack, and CEO of Silver Sable International. The operations of Wild Pack and Silver Sable International fund the national economy of the fictional small European state of Symkaria.

Symkaria shares a border with Latveria. If you are familiar with Marvel Comics geography you know Latveria is ruled by Doctor Doom. Silver Sable and Victor Von Doom have an annual diplomatic dinner at Castle Doom in Doomstadt. The friendship between these two states is deep-rooted and dates back to World War II.

Silver’s father ran a Nazi hunting group. Her mother was killed in front of her by enemies of her father. Silver devoted her training to becoming as emotionless and effective as possible. The only emotion she has problems with is rage whenever her family is threatened.

Silver has teamed up with many Marvel super-heroes along the way. She also began to develop feelings of affection for Spider-man, who helped her on more than one occassion.

The team up for a movie

Both of these women have ties to Spider-man. They are strong, independent, and intelligent women. Both operate in on the fringe (Black Cat is a burglar and Silver Sable is a mercenary). There is potential for this movie to be great with a great writer and good casting choices. My main concern is Sony’s track record with making super-hero movies. Hopefully they’ve learned from their mistakes.

Looking forward to seeing this one in theaters.
